When we first considered open adoption as a way to build our family, we will be honest that we experienced enormous fear about what to expect, nervous about whom we would meet and what may happen. We secretly doubted that we could ever come through this experience happy and as a loving family. We also felt vulnerable to exposing ourselves to potential pain and disappointment.
Then we met Laura, Grace's birth mother, and the wisdom of open adoption became crystal clear! Although Laura was only fourteen at the time, she taught us many lessons, but most importantly the true meaning of trust, respect and love. We think Laura is an incredible young woman whom we have grown to adore. Through our daughter, we share an important and unending bond with Laura and her family. We now know the truth behind the saying that a child can never have too much love.
Laura now lives in Texas, and we typically see her twice a year. We will go to Texas and visit her and her family, and Laura will come and visit us as well. We have fun showing Laura the sights of the "big city" that she's never seen before, as well as having Grace spend time with her birth mother. Between our visits we talk with Laura once a month or so, and send pictures often. |
